Deaconess Hospital invites students to apply to become junior volunteers this summer. Students can have the opportunity to gain work experience, observe health care careers and earn community service hours. Volunteer positions are staffed Monday through Friday with the exception of the main campus gift shop which is open 7 days a week,. Different assignments have different shift times. Volunteers can choose days of the week and time-slots (morning, afternoon, evening.) Areas of service include helping in the child care center, Courier delivery to patients, gift shop, library, clerical help in the post anesthesia care unit or same day surgery, sterile supply, volunteer visitor, etc. Applicants can call Martha Esparza at 450-3441 for more information. Earlham College is offering its Explore-A-College program June 20-July 3 for students entering sophomore, junior, or senior year. The program is designed to let you “practice” going to college. You take a class taught by an Earlham professor and earn 2 transferrable college credits. Eligible students generally have a B average and has performed well on achievement tests. You need a teacher recommendation from a teacher and a counselor, you must write an essay, and send a transcript along with your application. Deadline: June 1.

Classes of 2011 and 2012: Sewanee, the College of the South in Tennessee offers a Pre-College Field Studies Experience this summer June 27 – July 10. The Experience is a two-week outdoor program for talented students who are passionate about the outdoors and interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in the study of the environment. Led by full-time University faculty and utilizing Sewanee's ecologically diverse 13,000-acre campus, the program will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to environmental studies featuring ecology, botany, zoology, geology, archaeology, conservation policy, and environmental ethics. The Adventures In Medicine & Science (AIMS) Program, takes place June 28 - July 2, 2010 at Saint Louis University. The programs feature observations of live surgery, extensive study of human anatomy and exposure to multiple careers in medicine.
