All Grades: The 2010 Siemens Competition in Math, Science, & Technology is open for registration. Students may enter as individuals are teams. Individuals must be seniors, but team projects may have 2-3 members in grades 9-12. Online registration and instructions for this year’s competition are available: 222.siemens-foundation.org or at www.collegeboard.com/siemens. College scholarships range from $1,000 to $100,000. Deadline for entries is October 1, 2010.
Juniors and Seniors: The United States Senate Youth Program is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two student leaders from each state are chosen to attend a week long program in Washington, D.C. from march 5-12, 2011. Selection will be based solely on the students’ outstanding abilities and demonstrated qualities of leadership in an elected or appointed high school student office (Student Council). Applications can now be submitted for the Wendy’s High School Heisman award program. Eligible students must have at least a B grade average and participate in at least 1 school-sponsored sport during the 2010-2011 school year. You enter by registering at www.wendysheisman.com. You can apply between now and October 3rd.
Horatio Alger scholarships provide financial assistance to students who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarships range in value from $2,000 to $20,000. Submit an application online at: www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline: October 30, 2010.
Coca-Cola Scholarships Program is a scholarship program open to high school seniors across the country. Recipients of this award are well-rounded individuals with highly developed interests in their community. Applicants are evaluated on: Demonstrated leadership in school, commitment to community, academic achievement, and part-time employment. Eligibility requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), plan to pursue a degree at an accredited post-secondary school, and are not children or grandchildren of employees of Coca-Cola or its subsidiaries. Students must register online at www.coca-colascholars.org between now and October 31.
All Grades: The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is offering the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay contest. The theme for 2010-2011 is “Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?” Prizes are awarded at the local, district, and state level. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. March 5-9, 2011. The top scholarship winner receives $30,000. The audio should be 3-5 minutes in length recorded on a standard cassette tape or CD. Completed entries should be sent to the local Post. All Grades: The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor those students who have made a difference through volunteering in their community. You can win $1000 plus a trip to Washington, D.C. Visit http://spirit.prudential.com and click on the “How to apply” link. Application deadline: November 1, 2010.
All Grades: The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest awards scholarships from $1,500 at the state level up to $18,000 at the national level. Students compete at the state level with an 8-10 prepared speech on the constitution. There is also a 3-5 minute speech on 1 of 4 assigned topics. State winners go on to the national competition.. Go to www.legion.org for more information. Certification deadline: December 17, 2010, but students should be ready to send in materials by the 1st.
The Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreations, and Dance awards (4) $500 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors. These scholarships have been established to provide financial assistance to deserving high school students who plan to attend an Indiana college or university and pursue an education which leads to a degree in one of IAHPERD’s disciplines: health education, physical education, recreation, dance education, or sport administration. Criteria for selection include: participation in school activities, community activities, minimum GPA of 4.0/6.0 scale, financial need, and proposed major in 1 of the above mentioned disciplines. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2011. You can apply on-line at 222.inahperd.org. Applications are also available in the counseling office.
The Ted Hitch Scholarship is available to those seniors who are members or are a child of a member of Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union for at least 1 year prior to the February 1, 2011 deadline. Eligible students must have a minimum 5.0 GPA at the end of the fall semester. Applicants must submit an essay, two letters of recommendation, the application form, and an official transcript to be considered. You can apply on-line or print an application at: www.etfcu.org/scholarship beginning October 1st. Applications are also available in the counseling office. All materials must be received at ETFCU no later than February 1, 2011.
